Mathews Junior High Students Experience STEM Goes Red at NEOMED
A group of enthusiastic eighth-grade students from Mathews Junior High School recently had the opportunity to attend the prestigious STEM Goes Red event at Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED). Accompanied by their counselor, Mrs. Berkhouse, and eighth-grade science teacher, Mrs. DelGarbino, the students participated in a day filled with inspiring and hands-on STEM activities.
STEM Goes Red is a nationwide initiative organized by the American Heart Association to empower the next generation of female leaders in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The program emphasizes the importance of equipping young women with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in these rapidly growing fields, while also promoting heart-healthy living.
During the event at NEOMED, the Mathews students engaged in interactive experiences designed to spark curiosity and build confidence in STEM. Guided by experts and mentors, they gained insights into the vital role women play in driving innovation and solving real-world problems in STEM fields.
The importance of initiatives like STEM Goes Red cannot be overstated. Despite making up nearly half of the U.S. workforce, women account for less than 25% of STEM jobs. As employment opportunities in STEM continue to grow, programs like this are critical in addressing the gender gap and fostering a more inclusive workforce.
By encouraging more young women to pursue STEM, we are not only building a stronger, more innovative future but also addressing critical health challenges such as cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death among women.
The students left NEOMED with a newfound excitement for STEM and a deeper understanding of the opportunities available to them. Their participation in STEM Goes Red is a step toward breaking barriers and ensuring a brighter, more inclusive future for women in STEM. Mathews Junior High is proud to support initiatives like this and looks forward to seeing these young leaders continue to grow and excel.
